As a leading tech employer in the East we want to showcase some of the diverse roles and routes into tech. Today we meet IT Manager, Mark Baldwin.
What is your role at Epos Now and what does that involve?
My name is Mark and I am the IT Manager and Administrator at Epos Now. I manage the local IT infrastructure of the business, maintaining all IT assets and acquisitions. I also build and manage the company's internal IT policies, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery processes for connectivity. Obviously championing a scalable infrastructure, over a three-building estate. I have also built strong and close relationships with partners to obtain the best solutions for our company's end-user experience.
Currently one of my projects is to design and build a domain and AD (Active Directory) estate. I am also the Head Administration of our Salesforce CRM, Google Domain and New voice Media Cloud PBX systems. Previously other responsibilities were to assist CTO and Product Owner with product hardware analysis and testing which included IoT license procurement, Custom OS building, development and distribution.
What previous education/work experience helped hone your skills to get you where you are now?
I have very few "schooled" qualifications. Basically a number of the typical GCSE's ranging from A-D. An A in Religious studies isn't really gonna help anyone though. I dropped out of college after a couple of years but gained a GNVQ in media and music technology. But, that said, I have generally worked in technology all my adult life, ranging from IT support and administration to working within the Mobile phone industry.
My skills are generally down to wanting to understand how things work. Basic science stuff really, plus I have a really good memory, which helps me learn skills quickly. Which again, in turn, gives me a lot of focus and great troubleshooting skills, and I like to fix things. Like Anakin Skywalker says "life is simpler when fixing things".
Have you picked up any new skills in your role?
Definitely and I'm always learning new skills. You need to be able to evolve with the times. It also, makes it fun for yourself. I've developed my SOQL and SQL skills. Also built a couple of networks from scratch, including stuff like trunked VLANs and building custom firewall objects, to name a few.
What skill is most critical and why?
I think you need to be ridiculously patient and be passionate about what you do. You need to accept you won't have the answers immediately, but be confident in yourself when you do. For my role specifically, logical thinking and being adept at troubleshooting is a necessity.
Can you offer any advice to someone starting out?
Be passionate about what you want to do. If people believe you're passionate about something, it gives you an edge. Also be honest. If you're unsure or don't know something, your candour shows you have integrity and that can't be questioned, even if your skills are missing something, and that's something you can build on. So be willing to learn and just enjoy yourself doing so.
