#MySkillsStory: Carlos

#MySkillsStory is a campaign spearheaded by City & Guilds Group. It aims to showcase that learning new skills can transform your life, whether it’s helping you to land a dream job, progress in your role or improving at a leisure activity.

As a leading tech employer in the East we want to showcase some of the diverse roles and routes into tech. Today we meet Head of Corporate Accounts, Carlos Ramos.

#MySkillsStory: Carlos

What is your role at Epos Now and what does that involve?

As Head of Corporate Accounts, I am responsible for the onboarding and ongoing customer care of Epos Now’s largest accounts.

What previous education/work experience helped hone your skills to get you where you are now?

My role involves making sure the implementation and onboarding process for our largest accounts is nothing short of exceptional. This then ties into deepening and strengthening our long-term investment; freeing up further investment and making it easy for our clients to recommend us. This involves not just exceptional account management but having a really close relationship with software to make sure that our product is improving at the rate that corporate accounts need it to.

Working and living in Madrid really honed my skills for what I am doing now in respect to the fact that not only was I working for some world-class organisations and institutions, but I was doing a lot of my business in another language and within another culture. This meant that most of the time I was outside of my comfort zone and learning as I went, perfect prep for working for a hyper-growth tech company.

Have you picked up any new skills in your role?

I’ve picked up loads of skills in my new role. I’ve learnt about how our system integrates with other pieces of software via an open API and I have worked with internal and external developers to roll these projects out on large accounts with critical deadlines. I have also learned about payment integrations and other fintech products and how with cloud-based technology all you need to upgrade your product is an App. How easy is that?!?

What skill is most critical and why?

The most critical skill that I have picked up is understanding how all the pieces fit together from our internal processes in software and within our CRM system and how they join up to how the customer is using their back office and till front. I have also learned to shut up and listen much much more.

Can you offer any advice to someone starting out?

The best piece of advice I could give anyone looking to break into tech is that you need to be as comfortable as you can working outside of your comfort zone and whatever happens believe in yourself and never give up no matter what.
