Sir Stelios Haji-loannou, best known for founding budget airway easyJet, has opened a supermarket with all items costing 25p. The easyFoodstore is aimed at those struggling in the current economic climate, with the brand sitting somewhere between food banks and discount supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl. The shop's slogan reads “No expensive brands, Just food honestly priced”.
Stelios needed a reliable and efficient Pos system to support his new venture. Having extensively trialled Epos Now software with his charitable foundation abroad, he found the system more than adequate in fulfilling his retail requirements and as a result introduced this into the easyFoodstore.
Stelios was inspired to open the shop following his ‘Food from the heart’ foundation's work in Cyprus and Greece. The sudden influx of refugees to the Greek islands put a great deal of strain on resources, with thousands men, women and children going hungry. The foundation has helped more than 15,000 people across multiple sites in the Mediterranean.
Such a large scale operation required a system in place to ensure the scheme wasn’t open to abuse. They needed a way to keep track of the food handed out and to prevent people receiving multiple donations to sell on.
Stelios utilised Epos Now’s innovative software to ensure fair and orderly distribution of food. Using the system across 8 sites, the foundation was able to record how much food had been given out and protect the scheme against misuse, protecting other vulnerable people from being taken advantage of.
The Epos Now cloud platform was so successful, Stelios decided to roll out the the software in his British concept store in Croydon which proved to be a hit. The first permanent pilot store opened early February in a deprived area in north London, with future stores set to open in other underprivileged neighborhoods within the M25.
“This is another way the easy brand can serve the less well-off. Given my experience in distributing food for free in Greece and Cyprus, this is a more commercial attempt to sell basic food for 25p per item to those unwaged or low waged living around Park Royal.”
Epos Now has proved instrumental in the easyFoodstore’s budding success. The shop has proved incredibly popular and a fast and efficient checkout experience keeps the flow of customers moving. The shops “no brand-name” staple food products are in high demand, meaning stock sells out fast. The platform allows staff to accurately keep track of stock and replenish it as required.
